I'm Dr. Peter Hargreaves, a consultant and applied researcher with 8 years of experience working at the interface of people and nature across Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond.
My work combines satellite remote sensing, machine learning, and rigorous field research to measure environmental and social change in places where traditional data is scarce or unreliable. I founded Mirrormere Labs because I believe that better evidence leads to better decisions, and that the communities most affected by environmental change deserve the most rigorous attention.
My PhD from the University of Edinburgh developed machine learning methods to measure rural socioeconomic wellbeing in Mozambique using satellite data, addressing a fundamental challenge in development: how do you understand what's happening at scale, without losing sight of what's happening on the ground? That question drives everything I do.
I've worked with organisations including FCDO, UK Defra, IDRC, the Rockefeller Foundation, NERC, and the Scottish Funding Council, across programmes spanning biodiversity conservation, poverty reduction, livelihoods, and climate adaptation. My work has appeared in journals including the International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation and Nature Climate Change.
I'm based in Edinburgh and work internationally.
