Expertise
My work sits at the intersection of earth observation, applied data science, and impact measurement. I combine technical analytical capability with direct field experience in some of the world's most data-sparse environments, providing the kind of rigorous, independent evidence that organisations need to understand whether change is really happening on the ground.
Geospatial Analysis & Earth Observation
I specialise in the integration of satellite remote sensing and GIS with socioeconomic and ecological datasets to monitor environmental and social change at scale. My PhD developed machine learning methods to measure rural socioeconomic wellbeing in Mozambique using satellite data, addressing the fundamental challenge of understanding landscape-scale change in contexts where ground-based data is scarce or unreliable. I have applied geospatial methods across Sub-Saharan Africa to track land use and land cover change, monitor ecosystem condition, and support programme decision-making in biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, and natural resource management contexts.
Machine Learning & Data Science
I develop and apply machine learning models for impact measurement and environmental monitoring, with a particular focus on contexts where conventional data collection approaches are impractical or insufficient. My work draws on a range of supervised and unsupervised methods for classification, prediction, and pattern recognition across large-scale geospatial and socioeconomic datasets. I am experienced in the full data science pipeline from model development and validation through to communicating findings to non-technical audiences and translating outputs into actionable evidence.
Impact Measurement & Evaluation
I design and deliver rigorous impact measurement systems for complex programmes operating at the interface of people and nature. My approach is theory-based, relying on Theory of Change frameworks to understand not just what happened but how and why. I have particular expertise in quasi-experimental and experimental evaluation design, power analysis, multi-stage sampling, and Results Framework and indicator development. I have conducted independent mid-term and impact evaluations for UK Defra Biodiversity Challenge Funds programmes, Defra Biodiverse Landscapes Fund programmes, and Mastercard Foundation initiatives across Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Field Research & Primary Data Collection
I have extensive experience designing and delivering primary data collection in complex, low-resource field environments across Sub-Saharan Africa. This includes household survey design, sampling frame development, enumerator recruitment and training, qualitative data collection through Key Informant Interviews and Focus Group Discussions, and end-to-end data quality assurance. I understand the practical realities of fieldwork in data-sparse environments and design research instruments that are rigorous without being extractive, ensuring findings are both credible and contextually grounded.
